Talented actor “A-Pasin Ruangwut” tells the story of the beginning of his faith in the Naga, making good wishes, and whether worshiping the Naga will really bring bad luck in love? How did you become the godfather of Naga? How did it all start?
A Phasin: It happened because someone contacted me to do a program about following the footsteps of the 9 Naga Kings. When we went there, we encountered many strange stories. That program continued for 3 years, from 9 episodes it became almost 200 episodes without being able to change the host. Most recently, Pu Sila went to pay respects to him and interview his disciples, Ajarn Ling, and we happened to meet him. He made a prediction and talked about past lives, saying that we are the descendants of King Jayavarman VII and Goddess Somanakadevi.
Which is the origin of the Naga, the female Naga king of ancient Khmer. I had already heard these stories from other teachers. I let it go because I felt that living in the present was happier. Knowing the future was not good, knowing the past was just that. But when it came to Luang Pu Sila, who was famous for his kindness, I didn’t let it go. When I didn’t let it go, I felt like searching for the history and background of his descendants. So I learned a lot. Until now, the work that has been pouring in is about joining the ceremony because they believe that if I go, I will have the energy of the Naga.
What do people misunderstand about the Naga?
A. Phasin: There are many. For example, the Naga wanted merit, the Naga wanted to ordain. As far as I know, the Naga didn’t want to ordain. They just came to test the Buddha’s power, so they asked to ordain. Because according to history, the Buddha protected the Buddha so that he could succeed and attain enlightenment. They had to come and test how great the Dharma of this new teacher who revolutionized the caste system from other religions and created a new religion was. The Buddha asked them not to come and live among humans. They didn’t have to ordain. They could practice anywhere, the Naga said. So all monks should be Naga first. Then they can become monks, which means keeping their promises. So it makes sense why they have to be Naga first. There would be no word “animal” in his mouth. The Buddha would use the word “all creatures”.
How should one actually make a wish?
A Phasin: The way to ask for blessings that the world is teaching us right now. Most of us ask for blessings, ask for good luck, win the lottery, get rich quickly, encounter obstacles, but we usually don’t succeed quickly. A good way to ask for blessings is to look at AI, write words and create images. The more detailed we write, the more the image will be in line with our hearts. Therefore, asking for blessings from gods is the same. The universe teaches us that if we want to ask for blessings from sacred things that are energy, we should be specific. I believe in the Naga, so I pray that those who also believe in the Naga and have businesses that need presenters or promote something call me to work. I prayed like this for 3 days, right when I was in the most troubled period of my life. We don’t believe because we saw it or it’s real. We believe because it’s a deal that works. In fact, no matter how sacred the gods in the world are, we have to do it ourselves anyway. Therefore, in the strategy of religion, it reflects the power in our body and mind. How sacred it is depends on us.
Belief that worshiping the Naga will cause unlucky love?
A Phasin: In the past, I believed it because I was divorced and now I am a daddy, raising children. But it’s not like that. My ex-wife is still at home. She is LGBTQ. Now she has a girlfriend and is happy. I let her girlfriend come to my house. But I choose to be single rather than be with my children. And I learned that my friends who worship Ganesha were disappointed in love. My friends who worship Guan Yin Bodhisattva were also disappointed in love. It’s because the minds of two people have the same goal, but not at the same time. Some people want to be rich. Some want to rest. Some are still flirtatious. Love is not fulfilled. Therefore, the only thing that gods cannot give is love. Even gods have problems with love. But love is a kind of charm that cannot be controlled.
Has your love allowed people to enter your life?
A Phasin : I opened it but I didn’t give time because I already gave time to a man, my son (laughs).
Is there a big age gap?
A Phasin: A lot. I’m 50, my son is 9 years old, and he asked me, “Daddy, can you help me live until I’m old?” Until I’m older than Daddy, I counted how much more I have left. What is the average lifespan of Thais if we live like this?
